One of the questions I get asked most often is simple: Where should I eat in Mexico City?
And for someone who’s always curious and dedicates her life to eating around, the answer changes every few months.
New restaurants open every week, chefs move projects, coffee shops improve their offerings, and sometimes a famous taco stand becomes the place I stop recommending.
Rather than trying to create a definitive list of the best restaurants in Mexico City, I prefer sharing the places I’ve genuinely enjoyed and recommended recently. These are the spots I find myself returning to, sending friends to, or mentioning whenever someone asks for food recommendations.
Also important noticing, you won’t find the same spots found in every other list, not because I don’t love such places (like Contramar), but because you don’t really need my help to know about them.
Casual Restaurants & Super Casual
Not every memorable meal in Mexico City has to happen at a fine dining restaurant. Some of my favorite places are casual spots where the focus is simply on great food and a welcoming atmosphere.
TALLER DE OSTIONES BY FISM
VERSALLES #113, COL. JUAREZ
Easily my most visited spot this year. All the seafood is flown directly from Baja Sur 3 times a week which makes it some of the freshest in the city. Ask for a sit at the chef’s table to enjoy watching them chuck countless oysters and maybe even getting a sneak peak at the newest shipping.
Their tuna tostada is amazing and their desserts are weird in the best way posible. The have $20mxn oysters on Mondays if you’re into that (which you totally should).
CAFE OCASO
ALVARO OBREGON #04, COL. ROMA
From the creative mind behind Voraz comes this new extra casual venture. They offer breakfast in the most comforting version as noted by their crunchy yet soft pancake, and the shift to a simple compressed menu and cocktails after 2pm. Get their tlayuda for a fulfilling bite and a cocktail just to be merry.
TIERRA ADENTRO COCINA
NEVADO #112, COL. PORTALES
This amazing spot is open for breakfast and lunch. Their food is inspired in traditional Mexican recipes from all over the country. Located in the Portales neighborhood, which makes it a perfect stop when you’re on your way to Frida Kahlo’s museum or the southern part of the city in general. Get their entomatadas for maximum pleasure.
RESTAURANTE OL
INSURGENTES SUR #84, COL. ROMA
Favorite discovery of 2025. The attention to detail and execution of every single dish is incredible. A menu inspired by walks in the woods just outside the city and the chef’s upbringing. The technique is impressive, but what stood out most to me was the impeccable storytelling and hospitality. Yes, it might be a bit more upscale than the rest, but the ambiance still makes it feel like a very welcoming place.
Coffee, Sweets & Breakfast
Mexico City’s coffee scene continues to evolve, with excellent specialty coffee shops opening throughout the city.
Delfino cafe
OAXACA #99, COL. ROMA
One of my ultimate favorite Mexican Streetwear brands recently opened its very own cafe. In a very centric location this is now a perfect spot to chill, sip & shop extra cool unique pieces.
SAN
MICHOACAN #84, COL. CONDESA
If you’re looking for your matcha fix, look no further. This is a close as it gets to the japanese experience. Do come with time to spare as it is always has a long line due to the extreme care they put into each cup.
COMPAY
ATLATA #9, COL. CONDESA
Great espresso based drinks as well as drip coffee. A selection of beans from Mexico that showcase the richness of our land. They also have caffeine-free beverages. This is a place to lay low and read a book or have a talk, with un existing laptops area.
RUTA DE LA SEDA
AURORA #134, COL. DEL CARMEN
An extra classic spot in the Coyoacan neighborhood with a huge variety of cakes including matcha and figs flavored pieces. Come here to find locals indulging in long gossipy breakfasts. You can also get everything as a takeaway and take it to the main Coyoacan plaza.
Tacos & Street Food
No Mexico City food guide would be complete without tacos or street food.
Whether you’re looking for classic favorites or newer spots that deserve attention, these are just some of the best experiences I’ve had.
ESQUITES AT REFORMA 222
PASEO DE LA REFORMA #222, COL. JUAREZ
Right outside a busy mall, lies a small street corn stand. Lines can get quite long but totally worth it. Try topping your cup of these rich charred corn kernels with their crunchy homemade salsa macha.
LA TONINA
SERAPIO RENDÓN #26, COL. SAN RAFAEL
A time machine hidden in the San Rafael neighborhood specializing northern style tacos. Their flour tortillas are some of the best in the city and their sweet gorditas are the perfect follow-up to the chilorio taco.
Cocktails, Beer & Wine
Sometimes the perfect end or (beggining )to a day of eating is just a drink.
DESPACHO MARGARITA
CORDOBA #115, COL. ROMA
The bar where I’m most likely to be found this year. It’s easy, simple, casual and full of agave. Of course their speciality are the margaritas, whether it is in the form of a slushee or the typical shaken option. The beef taco is a must have, even if you’re not hungry.
BAR LIEBRE
TABASCO #195, COL. ROMA
Another option in the middle of the Roma neighborhood. Extra casual ambiance, different Dj appearances and a shareable white wine sangria available on site.
MANADA
DIAGONAL DE SAN ANTONIO #1923, COL. NARVARTE
A little bit of self-promotion: this is my bar! We designed this to be the relaxed neighborhood bar. All spirits, bitters and liquors are exclusively Mexican and all wines are natural. We also serve small bites and we close quite early, so basically we have the pre- party (or night cap) bar we always wanted.
Food Shopping and Edible Souvenirs
One of the best ways to remember Mexico City when you’re already back home is a small little bite.
Gallina de Guinea
AURELIANO RIVERA #4, COL. SAN ANGEL
Located in the quaint San Ángel neighborhood, inside a stately old mansion, this tiny bookstore is entirely devoted to food, drinks and culinary history. It is small but tightly curated, the kind of place where you lose track of time flipping through cookbooks, rare finds and deep dives into how and why we eat. Add a couple of magnets or kitchen towels to your collection, low key souvenirs for fellow food obsessed.
MIS mezcales
COAHUILA #138, COL. ROMA
Opened in 2017 and ran by the always friendly and happy to help Omar Trejo this beautiful mezcal store with over 50 different regional Mexican spirits has now a mezcal tasting room. He will take you through a journey full of agaves, flavors and knowledge.
BONUS: You can also book a private artisanal mezcal tasting via Devoured to learn and taste more about the rare spirits they collect.
